A
treatment lasts between 45 min. and one hour, not including an additional
half-hour medical intake during the initial visit. Tui Na and shiatsu
(forms of oriental bodywork) are used to loosen muscles and relax the
body at the beginning of most treatments. Acupuncture needles are placed
at points specific to each patient’s symptoms and overall constitution.
While the needles are in place, various other modalities are used to
aid in the healing process; including moxibustion (a form of heat therapy),
electrical stimulation, laser therapy, cupping, and reflexology. Needles
are retained for 10 – 40 minutes during the treatment. Ear seeds
or tacks, or herbal patches are left on the body if necessary for specific
ailments. Herbs, supplements, homeopathy, and dietary recommendations
are given between treatments to help achieve optimal health.
In some cases, non-needle treatment options are available for young
children and infants. If you have a fear of needles, discuss it with
your acupuncture physician, so an appropriate treatment strategy can
be agreed upon.
