Reflexology is a holistic healing method which involves pressure and massage of specific points found on the feet and hands, originally known as reflex zone therapy. The origin of reflexology is between 5,000 and 14,000 years old. It was practiced in India, China, by the Incas in Peru and in Egypt during different periods in history. The points found on the hands and feet are called reflex points. As with all acupuncture related modalities, reflexology teaches that a vital energy, or life force, circulates between the organs of the body, permeating every living cell and tissue. If the energy becomes blocked, the part of the body relating to the blockage is affected. Energy blocks in the human body are reflected on the hands and feet. One of the originators of modern reflexology found that the feet have greater sensitivity and using them enhances treatments. By using specific techniques, one can detect blocks as tight places or by the presence of gritty areas (crystalline deposits). These techniques are used to dissipate energy blocks and break down crystalline structures.

Through stimulation of the circulatory and lymphatic systems, and by encouraging the release of the toxins, reflexology promotes the body to heal itself. In this way reflexology is used for treating disease, and is also effective in cases of stress, tension and fatigue. Like acupuncture, reflexology can also be used as a preventive measure against illness.

Using this, or any form of complementary medicine, the patient is involved and needs to participate in ridding the body of the cause of the blocks. This is done with life style and dietary changes, which help relieve the affects of the stress in ones life. Some patients are also sent home with instructions to use a tennis ball to massage their feet and which enables them to enhance the affects of acupuncture treatments at home between visits. As reflexology removes energy blocks, the energy currents flow freely once more, and the body is returned to harmony. This therapy is used in conjunction with many of Dr. Nirenberg’s acupuncture treatments. She uses it to relax the patient while treating the present problem area, and gathers information on what other areas of the body also need addressing.
